Chapter 1: Studying Life 1.1 What is Biology? o Biology is the scientific study of living things o Living organisms Consist of one or more cells Contain genetic information Use genetic information to reproduce themselves Are genetically related and have evolved Can convert molecules obtained from their environment into new biological molecules Can extract energy from the environment and use it to do biological work Can regulate their internal environment o Some forms of life may not display all of these characteristics at the same time, like a seed lying dormant in the desert o The existence of viruses depends on cells, and it is highly probably that viruses evolved from cells, but are they alive? o Organisms can be unicellular, multicellular and acellular (e.g. Viruses) o Leeuwenhoek and Hooke discovered cells in pond water, plants and cork using and early microscope in the late 1600s o Schlieden and Schwann were observing plant and animal tissues respectively and came to the conclusion that all living things are made up of cells o Initial Cell theory states that Cells are the basis structural and physiological units of all living organisms Cells are both distinct entities and building blocks of more complex organisms o Pasteur demonstrated that sterile objects cannot beget microorganisms, thus disproving spontaneous generation Life must be present for life to be generated o Modern Cell theory states that All cells come from pre-existing cells
