Chapter 56: Species Interaction and Coevolution Chapter 56: Species Interactions and Coevolution 56.1 – What types of interactions do ecologists study? o Antagonistic interaction is when one species benefits and the other is harmed Predation Herbivory Parasitism o Mutualism is when both species benefit o Competition is when both species are harmed o Commensalism is when one species benefits, and the other is unaffected o Amensalism is when one species is harmed, and the other is unaffected o All types of species interactions can impact the evolution of the species involves o Coevolution (reciprocal evolution) refers to the adaptation of features in a species in direct response to the actions of another species o A series of reciprocal adaptations can lead to an evolutionary arms race To see who becomes more powerful in the relationship first 56.2 – How do antagonistic interactions evolve? o Predator-prey relationships lead to a variety of adaptations o Many predators are large, stronger, and/or faster than their prey o Prey defenses include Camouflage (crypsis) Disguise as unpalatable meals or predators (homotypy) Chemical defenses, common in predators smaller than their prey Advertise their toxicity (aposematic coloration) Resemblance of other threatening or poisonous organisms (mimicry) Batesian mimicry – youre not toxic, but you imitate toxic organisms
