Topic: Genital Mutilation General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience to oppose the practice of genital cutting and help support against the practice. Type of Question: Question of value and fact. Organizational Pattern: Cause-Effect Pattern Subgoal: Adaption, I want my audience to adapt my belief of anti-genital mutilation, and to want to help promote a change, new laws in these countries. Thesis : It is necessary to put an end to the practice of genital mutilation as it negatively affects these women physically, emotionally, and socially. Attention Getting Device: Give the definition of what genital mutilation is. Introduction : According to the Random House Dictionary, genital mutilation is “any type of cutting or removal of all or some of the genital organs especially excision of the clitoris.” Now imagine young girls as young as 4 years old going through such a process. A process that is encourages by elders and parents in most African, some Middle East and Asian countries. To these elders and parents, they justify this practice with their cultural beliefs, having no medical reason for it. Does it make sense to put these young girls through such a horrific process based on only cultural beliefs? Is it ethical of us to allow this type of cruelty to continue to go on? This is why I am here today, to persuade you to oppose against the practice of genital cutting as it negatively affects these women physically, psychologically, and socially.
