Topic: The Dream Act General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience how passing the Dream Act will have a positive impact on our country. Type of Question: Question of value and fact. Organizational Pattern: Cause-effect pattern Subgoal: Adaption, I want my audience to accept my belief and value. Thesis : It is important to pass the Dream Act because it will be beneficial to our economy, our educational system, and the lives of undocumented students. Introduction : John Updike once said “Dreams come true, without that possibility, nature itself would not incite us to have them.” I wish I could say this quote is true, but unfortunately it isn’t especially if you’re a student in this country without any legal documentation. In our economy today, the best choice a student can make after graduating high school is go to college, the choice all of us have made in this room. The dream to go to college, graduate, and have a career is hard to achieve when your legal status prevents you from being eligible for any assistance. This is why democratic Senator Dick Durbin reintroduced the Dream Act to help give these students the opportunity to gain their citizenship, get an education, and become successful. However, on December 18, 2010 the Dream Act failed to get enough votes in the senate, leaving it still as an indecisive bill.
