But the temperature reaches its peak in the mid-afternoon at most locations (in calm, clear conditions, good football weather kind of days). Why? Because temperature changes are caused by imbalances in the energy budget at a location. A location typically runs an energy surplus from right around sunrise until mid-afternoon, because the light energy from the Sun is more than the heat energy the Earth is putting out at that location. The surplus = temperature rise, hour after hour. When the Sun is low enough in the sky and the temperature is warm enough (remember, the Stefan- Boltzmann Law says that energy emission is proportional to temperature) that the outgoing heat energy is more than the incoming light energy, then the surplus turns to a deficit.
