2 Ways Air Goes Up Air rises if warmer than surroundings: CONVECTION Air rises if forced up a mountain: OROGRAPHIC LIFTING So, to understand if air will “bubble up,” we need to understand temperature, how it changes in the vertical, and how to compare the temperature of a bubble of air with its surroundings. (The latter isn’t important in the forced-up-mountain case )
3 One Process By Which Temperature Changes First, a definition: Lapse Rate: How temperature changes as you go up Adiabatic process: due only to expansion or compression of air; occurring without loss or gain of energy DEMO example: Expanding air coming out of a can of compressed air. What happens to the temperature, and why? Meteorological example: lift a “parcel” or bubble of air, the higher it goes the less air is around it to press in on it--so it expands! As it expands, it cools.
