Course Description:   This course provides an introduction to the field of American Studies and  to the major at UCSC.  Beginning in the nineteenth century and moving to the present, we will  explore   key   historical   moments   that   have   shaped   American   national   identity   and   our  understanding of the past.   We will draw upon a diverse range of sources including political  manifestos, newspaper articles, visual art, photography, autobiography, and historical writing in  our introductory survey of the field.  Topics to be covered include:  manifest destiny and the  closing of the frontier in the 19 th   century, urbanization and immigration, U.S. imperialism at  home and abroad, Industrialization and Progressive Era reform, World Wars and the Cold War,  the long civil rights movement, Vietnam, the conservative turn in modern American, and the  contested nature of American memory.
