Individual is both the product and producer of society Circumstances don’t define you (your lot in life) We understand body through the social strcutures in module 1 We understand it by shape meanings style practicesa and our size Shaped by interplay of individual and aspects of society Active body is NOT natural But IS shaped by the social context/environment Ideological formations Beliefs and ideas of society o Women’s rights (they were seen as subordinate) Cultural texts Media and models (1950’s) father knows best and leave it to beaver Practices Inherent in those beliefs (mother cleans and cooks) Institutional structures Codes rules that make sure the practices are not challenged A persons identity is NOT NATURAL Opportunities that are available or denied to you based on your identity  position
