GEOS 1004, SPOTILA Lecture 2, 8/26/09 *There are no notes for Lecture 1, which was just an introduction. Lecture 1 covered the topic 'why study geology' as well as providing motivations for the class, in terms of the 'uses of geoscience'. Be aware of some examples, as well as my main point about why educated peoples living in a society should understand their planet (as opposed to monkeys, who just simply like or dislike without understanding). GEOLOGY AND SCIENCE geology = the science that studies the Earth; -its history = how it formed and evolved -its composition = internal and external structure -internal functions = dynamic Earth -how it works at the surface -how we can use and preserve it This includes the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, solid Earth, as well as other planets. List some examples of geological research (it's not just rocks): 1) Geologic history, rocks 2) Active processes - monitoring 3) Natural hazards or geophysics 4) Chemistry, laboratory studies 5) Computer modeling Physical geology is focused on the solid Earth and less concerned with chemical or biological processes or Earth history. Other types of geoscience include geochemistry, geophysics, geomorphology, petrology,
