Cruiselines Cruise Industry Development Early Cruises: Transportation and Immigration The first cruise ship was created by The Peninsula and Oriental Steam navigation Company in 1844 from Britain to Spain First American cruise was in 1867; Pleasure Cruise New Passengers and new Directions WWI created a new era for cruising Cruises changed from transportation to “the fashionable thing to do” Slight decline during WWII From late 1950s, cruise ships declined with the popularity of air travel Short trips were established The birth of Modern Cruising 1966- Ted Arison started Norwegian Caribbean Line (NCL) and transformed South Florida’s cruise industry By the 1970s, cruise ships went to a variety of places 1977, the Princess was used for a television show called “The Love Boat” Today Cruising is: Seabourne tours for pleasure, relaxation or sightseeing on a cruise ship or a pleasure craft All inclusive packages (trip, accomadation, catering) are sold per cabin, with a pre-planned sailing itinerary
