Sociology 10/23/09 Hispanics The US- category didn’t exist until 1980; considered white before 1980 Largest is Mexican/American Mexican- born in Mexico Mexican American- Born in America Chicano- Young Mexican American generation Hispanic- Spanish speaking individual Latino- those that come from Latin American countries Race- Hispanic is not a race. It is an ethnicity. Hispanics can be of any race: White, Black, and Native American Mestizo- White and NA Afro-Mestizo- Black and NA Mulatto- Black and White Black Negro; Colored African-American White WASP- White Anglo Saxon Protestants Assimilation Changes The Invisible-Hidden Group- has no answer to be white; other races have pride White privilege- still dominant “favored” group Ideology- the way things ought to be Extra Credit- 1 to 2 pages “Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” Write a Reflection Paper = Due Next Exam; Up to 7 points Theories of Prejudice Psychological Scapegoating- blames others Authoritarian personalities- No in between; obeys orders
