A theory provides a systematic framework to study development. There are three main types we will be looking at: 1) Grand theories are theories that have lasted through time and provided many directions in which to go development. They are no longer as relevant as they once were because of the passage of time, new research newer theories. 2) Minitheories explain a portion of development but are not as widespread or comprehensive as a grand might be. 3) Emergent theories are a new and very important type of theory. Emergent theories are comprehensive, new information, and have been formed within the past 30 or so years. 2. Cognitive theory helps us to understand how intellectual processes and thinking affect actions. Behaviorism has shown the effect of the immediate environment on behavior. Psychoanalytic
