2Research DesignResearch plays a critical role in nursing practice today. Using scientific evidence from research impacts nursing practice. Research is a vital tool for solving nursing problems and implementing evidence-based practices. Nurses use research to determine effective best practicesto improve patient care. Understanding the fundamental elements of research is essential for nurses. To provide evidence-based care, nurses must understand research processes and designs. This includes learning how to read, interpret, and analyze research. With this knowledge, nurses can decipher which research studies apply to their practice. Healthcare today is constantly changing. Information can become quickly outdated, treatments can be deemed ineffective, and new options to improve patient outcomes may be available. This requires nurses to use and understand research to implement change in nursing practice. This paper will further discuss quantitative and qualitative research, which are commonly used in nursing research studies. A summary of research sampling, including sampling strategies and the importance of proper sampling will be included. Lastly, the importance of creating an evidence-based nursing practice and the influence research has on making nursing practice safer will be included. Quantitative ResearchQuantitative research is based on objective information collected by statistical or numerical data. “Quantitative research sets out to gather data using measurement, to analyze this data for trends and relationships and to verify the measurements made” (Watson, 2015, p. 1). Since quantitative research utilizes statistics, it determines if something is statistically significant. It is important for the reader of the research study to know if a treatment or intervention is statistically significant. Statistical significance suggests that the observed advantages are likely to have happened as a result of the treatment being tested, or that the
3observed relationship between variables is real (Watson, 2015). In quantitative research, extraneous variables are easily ruled out. Quantitative researchers are to minimize or control for errors (Landreneau & Creek, 2009). This is due to the researcher being setting strict inclusion and exclusion criteria for the sample. The experimental design of quantitative research tests cause and effect. This design is used to test the effectiveness of an intervention. In an experimental study, the researcher can manipulate the independent variable and study the effect on a dependent variable (Watson, 2015). Using an experimental quantitative research design is considered the best method for testing the cause and effect link in clinical interventions (Watson, 2015).
