Janice Schakowsky is sponsoring this bill. •The H.R. 2581 bill will amend the Public Health Service Act to establish direct care registered nurse-to-patient staffing ratio requirements in hospitals, and for other purposes (GovTrack.us, 2020).
H.R. 2581:SUMMARY•Hospitals will be required to develop and implement a staffing plan that must be consistent with the requirements of this bill.•Staffing plans must also include adequate ancillary and support staff. •Hospitals must adhere to the minimum direct care registered nurse to patient ratios. •The staffing requirements stated in this bill are specific for each unit in the hospital. For example, in critical care units the maximum amount of patients a nurse can have is two. •Hospitals must also maintain accurate records of direct care registered nurse to patient ratios in each unit for each shift.
