Fedora Linux Password Cracking Understanding the Process Start a VMware Clone of Fedora We want to create our own VM that is apart from the template so that we can  make some changes and the changes will leave the template un-affected. . Generate some User accounts to crack ( su -, adduser ) Create users with different password intensities to watch the different effects it  has on the password cracking session. Load Back-Track ISO into The Fedora VM CDROM Drive This is like sticking a CD (or USB) into a physical computer and using it to boot  into another Operating System. The original OS gives up all of its file access list  securities that were enforced by the original OS (in this case Fedora). Locate the Fedora root drive and mount it ( fdisk, mount ) Locate the local drives and mount them so that we can find the passwd and  shadow files that contain the usernames and encrypted hashes of the Fedora  box. Create a password file with the hashes that are readable to john ( unshadow ) Run john on our file ( ./john ) Obstacles Physical Access Local File Permissions  BIOS Permissions System Password Encryption Entire Disk Encryption
