English 411 Ms. Malnig I SSUES TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING YOUR NEXT DRAFT Writing about literature: Writing about a piece of literature is different from other writing you may have done. First of all, your thesis will focus on a question relating only to an analysis of the story itself; you will not be making generalizations from the story and applying them to the rest of the world. In addition, all your evidence will come directly from the text of the story you are analyzing. In other words, you will not use your own experiences or observations to support or illustrate your ideas. You will, however, use your own explanations and interpretations of evidence from the text to support your ideas. Assignment: This is not an essay about an issue (such as the relationship between parents and children or the generational issues between immigrants and their children). Again, it is a direct analysis of the story. The essay also needs to be more than an extended summary of the story.
