English 411 Ms. Malnig E SSAY ASSIGNMENT #3 -- “My Oedipus Complex” Background: In the short story, “My Oedipus Complex,” we learn the main characters: the boy Larry, his mother, and his father and become intrigued by the circumstances in the story. This is the third story we’ve read in this class that deals with family relationships. Assignment: Write an essay, choosing from one of the prompts below. Compare and contrast the relationship each boy has with his father in both “Powder” and “My Oedipus Complex.” You can discuss what techniques the authors use to create their stories and how the sons in the stories developed by the ending of each one. You can also discuss the differences between the sons, such as age and personality and how those affect the development of the story. OR Compare and contrast the roles of the mothers in the three stories we’ve read: “Mother,” “Powder,” and “My Oedipus Complex.” Even though the mother in “Powder” is “off- stage,” so to speak, she exerts an influence on the characters.
