Chapter 1 – Electronic Structure and Covalent Bonding Organic compounds : compounds that contain carbon, not limited to those found in nature outer shell or attain an outer shell with eight electrons Electronic configuration : describes the orbitals occupied by the atom’s electrons Molecular weight : the sum of the atomic weights Core electrons : electrons in inner shells Valence electrons : electrons in the outermost shell Nonpolar covalent bond : electrons are shared equally, as in F—F or H—H Electronegativity : a measure of the ability of an atom to pull the bonding electrons towards itself Polar covalent bond : a covalent bond between atoms of different electronegativities Formal charge : the difference between the number of valence electrons at atom has when not bonded to other atoms and the number of electrons it owns when it’s bonded Formal charge = # valence e - - (# lone pairs + ½ # bonding e - ) Carbocation : positively charged carbon atom Carbanion : negatively charged carbon atom
