MSE Test 3 Study Guide Microstructural Development Definitions Phase: a chemically and structurally homogenous region of a material Component: a chemically distinct and essentially indivisible substance Phase diagram: a graphical representation of the phases present and the ranges in composition, temperature, and pressure over which the phases are stable o Components, phases, melting points of components and phases o Compositions of each phase o Amount of each phase present at a particular temperature for a given alloy composition Degrees of freedom: the number of independent variables necessary to specify equilibrium Invariant: equilibrium in which there is no freedom to change variables The One-Component Phase Diagram Gibbs Phase Rule: Single component can be either an element or a stoichiometric compound Pressure vs. Temperature The Two-Component Phase Diagram Gibbs Phase Rule: since pressure is fixed at 1 atmosphere Converting between weight percent and atomic percent: Isomorphous system: having the same structure; complete solid solution o Complete solid solubility occurs only when all Hume-Rothery rules are followed Liquidus boundary: the temperature above which only liquid exists Solidus boundary: the temperature below which only solid exists State point: temperature, pressure, and composition of a phase Determining Phase Compositions o If the state point falls within a single-phase field, then the phase composition is identical to the alloy composition, and the material is 100% of that phase o When a state point falls within a two-phase field, there is one degree of freedom and therefore a change in composition
