Transit Photometry Measures the periodic dimming of the star caused by a planet passing in front of the star along the line of sight from the observer. The effect for a terrestrial planet is about 1 part in 10,000 lasting for 2 to 16 hours. Stellar variability is a problem…. . Size of the planet is estimated from the amount of starlight it blocks. They allow us to calculate the density of the planet.
