Survived the most devastating attack by any country and rebuilt to an economic superpower in 35 years. Again, in power, draws towards the elite psychology. 1. East v West East Japan, people have been there longer, rooted into culture West Japan, most cosmo and cultured 1. Cultures Jimon (5,000-500 BC) - Spiritual, ritual cultured Yayoi (300 BC- 300 AD) -Culture group -Brought rice -Rice as money until 19th century, -Rice taxation led to Army formation -Yayoi take over Jimon 1. Creation Myth: Izanagi and Izanami were lovers. Gods in Neatherworld create island from droplets from spear. Izanami died giving birth to god of fire. Izanagi is heart broken, tries to ressurect her, she is going throuhg purification. He cleanses himself and gives birth to two gods; Amaterasu, god of sun and beautiful, and Susa-no-o, god of storms and rogue. Susa-no-o attacks Amaterasu’s court, seeks to rape. Japan has major incest problem. Emperors can trace ancestry to Jimmu, becomes emperor. Evolves in Shinto 1. Shinto Shinto Japanese religion. Shinto = way of the gods. Concept: gods want individual to not be polluted: Tsumi No religious texts, not about sin, no right or wrong Harmony not morality Simplicity in worship Reverence of beauty *Religion is developed and the Japanese follow the idea of believing in a higher power. This lays the track for an emporer who will be recognized as divine. 1. Purime Yamato Clan Shinto believed that every clan had own god (Kami- Uji) Greatest god is Amaterasu, mother of japan and god of sun, and the greatest clan had her as god. Emperor is heaven, not the mediator but is god and divine. The emperor takes all power away from imperial house, worried of making mistake so don’t do anything.
