Maintaining Relations Def:  Actions and activities used to sustain desired relational definitions 1.  All relationships require maintenance behaviors or else they deteriorate Believe in a centrifugal force—relationships fall apart unless invest energy  and keep together Vs. Centripetal—relationships stay together unless something tears them  apart 2.  People are motivated to maintain equitable relationships Distributive justice (equity or FAIRNESS) is central to human relationships Equity exists whenever outcome-to-input ratios of each partner to an  exchange are equal Inputs (contributions to the relationship) Outcomes (what you get out of the relationship) Compare ratio of contributions and benefits Overbenefited person—more benefits and less contributions to relationship  (vice versa for underbenefited)
