2 The transition from high school to college, for that matter, a research university such as UC Santa Barbara, is a change in many different aspects of an incoming freshman students’ life including social, academic, eating and physical habits. The purpose of a university is to accept the overachieving students from high schools across the world in order to pursue a further education in their field of study. Thus, being the next highest level in education means a higher level of academic learning and studying. Although, for many students, including myself, having someone older tell you “college is much harder than high school” before going off to college, isn’t exactly enough information for you to accept that reality until you truly experience it. Which is why my freshman year was a learning process in terms of adapting to my new environment at UC Santa Barbara in terms of my time management, figuring out my priorities and how to effectively complete tasks as a new student on campus. As a high school student, the most important task was to get good grades in order to have a high GPA as it was an important factor in college acceptances, so naturally I worked hard in all of my classes in order to keep my grades up. However, in our modern era getting good grades just isn’t enough to get into prestigious schools as they want the most “well-rounded” student to attend their university, which meant taking more rigorous courses as Advanced Placement (AP) classes and showing leadership in extracurricular activities. By enrolling in AP classes such as English, Art History, Psychology and World History, I was able to gain insight as to what kind of material was taught at the college level and how to compact a 700-page book into the most important subjects. As Britt Andreatta said “Reading you do at a research university is often complex and features high levels of analysis, you may find it easier to break large readings into

3 smaller portions, which will allow you to process the information before you read more” (Andreatta, 2011) . At first, taking such a course was overwhelming, as I had never been assigned to read a chapter with forty pages due the following week. However, as the months went on I learned such study tips as annotating the text or writing the main points of a paragraph on a separate piece of paper. I learned for the most part, authors of these large college textbooks give so much detail in their topic that it tends to get off subject from what the student is trying to learn. Thus by taking the main points of the text and relating it to what I was learning in class, it made my study habits more effective in my other classes. In addition to annotating the text, by taking AP English I got a better grasp of what was expected from a well-written essay. For my
