Reel Injun Elliot Waniek Reel Injun is a film that gives an insightful look at the Indian or Native American and how they are portrayed through Hollywood movies through the history of cinema. Through the film the director Neil Diamond analyzes how the Indian is portrayed in an earlier time of film which influences the worlds misunderstanding of the Indian and as time goes on and film changes, the true portrayal of Indian life and culture is only most recently shown in films within the last 25 years. I chose this particular activity because I had always liked western movies, watching cowboys and Indians growing up; yet everything was portrayed through the American or white man perspective. I wanted to gain insight about how Indians felt about their treatment and what they thought of their race in popular film. Such films as these allow undergraduates gain insight into outside of the college community and into a culture that have been discriminated and mistreated throughout the history of the United States.
