Extra Credit Elliot Waniek After 9/11 many people wondered what was the next step in moving forward with the vacant lot in New York City. As 9/11 was such a tragic event it was important for the future architects’ to not only incorporate buildings in place of the world trade centers to show progression, but to include a memorial that was set apart from its surroundings, that made it distinct statement to the community as to why the event should be remembered. Through Michael Araad’s design of a concrete memorial with two holes, it embodied the two world trade centers as a lost piece of society but will always be intact with the citizens of the United States. For a landmark to be described as a memorial of sanctification it must be an area that is separate from its surrounds that is dedicated to a past event, person or group in order portray the heroism that was sacrificed by the particular individuals. Such an event as 9/11 in no way would resemble a designation memorial due to the fact that it was a tragic event in which over 2,500 lives were claimed in one of the biggest cities in the world. A designation memorial is less significant in American society as they merely recognize a contribution from a group, person or event to society. Due to the fact that 9/11 was such a tragic event, such a landmark would be classified as a sanctification memorial in order for our country to realize the sacrifice of the workers in those buildings and the heroism of the firefighters that risked their own lives for the sake of others....
