Week 4 Lecture 17:01 Test will include multiple choice and short answer format lectures and reading  What was the spatial precedent for the design of the early church o Roman basilica – it may not have looked like a church but already has  basilican architectural features Oakland Cathedral Controversial church that is very modern but does include architectural church  features o Has altar, axis, has clergy and congregation sections, mini chapels on the  outer edges o The chairs are arranged by class theoretically Old St. Peters, Rome 800 CE Built originally in 4 th  century Basilican plan Hagia Sophia (Church of Holy Wisdom), Constantinople, 360 Istanbul, Turkey Central plan Flying buttresses added to prevent collapse, very large dome Justinian built it, windows allow a lot of light into building  Chartes Cathedral (Notre Dame)
