Lecture 10 – April 29, 2010 Weber on Capitalism and Bureaucracy – Focus on Power Structure/Agency Problem Structuralism/voluntarism Institutionalism/rational choice theory Question is somewhat wrong-headed Freedom is social/cultural/political achievement Liberal subjectivity and rule of freedom Max Weber – Economics and Culture The Ghost of Karl Marx (he largely agreed with most of what Marx was saying) Agreed with Marx about the Power of Capitalism (most explosive and productive system in the world) Rejected Marx’s Economic Determinism The Spirit of Capitalism Greed is not the “spirit” (essence) of capitalism The spirit of capitalism is: “the pursuit of profit, and forever renewed profit, by means of continuous, rational, capitalistic enterprise” What caused Capitalism? CALCULATION is central to capitalism and al previous commercially oriented social action But the west adds formally free labor (i.e. Wage Labor) Labor can now be CALCULATED like any other expense/asset (this is crucial)
