Lecture 17 – The Self-fulfilling prophecy The Thomas Theorem “If men define situations as real, they are real in their consequences.” Believing something to be true shapes reality, even if the belief in question is false. A sociological parable Te great stock exchange collapse and the great depression 1932: the last national bank Black Wednesday Rumor of insolvency – run on the bank (run to the bank and get $ out before it collapse, but the act itself makes the bank collapse) Self-fulfilling Prophecy “the self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning…” “the specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuat3s a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof he was right from the beginning” Example Black Americans excluded from unions Are not socialized in worker solidity Need jobs, so become strike-breakers Strike-breaking then held as proof that they should be excluded from unions
