Elaine Chow Christina Schiesari COM 002 20 January 2011 The Chivalry of Knights and its Path to Virtue The chivalric code exists in The Song of Roland to distinguish between what is right and good and what is wrong and evil. Immediately, the distinction between the Christians and Muslims are apparent, with the former being the superior. A counselor to the pagan King Marsiliun openly argues to send their own children as hostages to Charlemagne as a deceptive peace offering, rather than “forfeit [their] honor and possessions, or be reduced to begging” (3). The reader begins to see how the pagans, or Muslims, value wealth and fortune, and King Marsiliun’s bribe further induces this perception by asking for a volunteer to see Charlemagne in exchange for “as much gold and silver as [he] could wish for, and as much land, and as many possessions” (5). Associated to these scenes is the chivalric code of detesting monetary rewards. Any genuine Christian knight would follow the code unconditionally and wholeheartedly. Juxtaposed against the righteous knight is the evil pagan whom desires money, corrupt or clean. Further evidence against the Muslim enemy is the name of the Emir’s sword, “Precieuse”. The Emir had heard of Charlemagne’s sword and its christened name of “Joyeuse”, and therefore followed suit. These swords’ names are so unalike in meaning, for “Joyeuse” makes reference to the spiritual happiness in being a Christian, whereas “Precieuse” denotes a yearning for material possessions. Naming one’s sword “Precieuse” is far from the mannerism of a noble Christian
