(10-0014) Organization and Methods Professor Mejia March 28, 2011 Chapter 9 Leadership Key Terms and Review Questions Key Terms -Charismatic leader: A rare personal quality attributed to leaders who arouse fervent popular devotion and enthusiasm. -Coercive power: Authority or power that is dependent on fear, suppression of free will, and/or use of punishment or threat , for its existence. -Effective leadership : is equal parts inspiration, communication and perspiration. The simplest way to measure the effectiveness of leadership involves evaluating the size of the following that the leader can muster. -Emotional intelligence: the ability to understand your own personal feelings and those of other people, to take other people’s feelings into account when reaching decisions and to respond to people’s feelings in a restrained and thoughtful way -Empowerment: the act of giving someone (such as an employee ) the power to take decisions -Expert power: Ability to influence other parties based on expertise and knowledge . Expert power in an organization is the ability to influence the behavior of others in the organization based solely on past experience and expertise in a specific area. -Hersey and Blanchard’s “Situational Leadership Model”: Popular model of leadership created by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard, with belief that effective leadership requires flexibility in leadership styles depending on the situation. The fundamental underpinning of the Situational Leadership Theory is there is no single "best" style of leadership.
