(10-0014) Organization and Methods Professor Mejia March 29, 2011 Chapter 12 Communication and Negotiation Key Terms and Review Questions Key Terms -Collaboration: act of working jointly. -Communication: exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another; it involves a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver -Communication network: telecommunications links and nodes arranged so that messages may be passed from one part of the network to another over multiple links and through various nodes. -Cultural distance: the degree to which norms and values or working methods between two companies differ because of their separate national characteristics -Decoding: An instance of the translation of something into a form more suitable for subsequent processing. -Downward Communication: Information flowing from the top of the organizational management hierarchy and telling people in the organization what is important (mission) and what is valued (policies). -Empathy: understanding and entering into another’s feelings. -Encoding: Encoding is the process of transforming information from one format into another. -Ethnocentrism : belief in the superiority of one’s own ethnic group. -Frames of reference: the context, viewpoint, or set of presuppositions or of evaluative criteria within which a person's perception and thinking seem always to occur, and which constrains selectively the course and outcome of these activities. -Gatekeeper:
