Chapter 4 Vocab 1. personality- the sum total of ways in which an individual reacts and interacts with others 2. personality traits- enduring characteristics that describe an individual's behavior 3. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBIT) a personality test that taps four characteristics and classifies people into 1 of 16 personality types a. Extraversion- a personality dimension describing someone who is sociable, gregarious, and assertive b. Agreeableness- a personality dimension that describes someone who is good-natured, cooperative, and trusting c. Conscientiousness- a personality dimension that describes someone who is responsible, dependable, persistent, and organized d. Emotional stability- a personalitv dimension that characterizes someone as calm, self- confident, secure versus nervous, depressed, and insecure e. Openness to experience- a personality dimension that characterizes someone in terms of imagination, sensitivity, and curiosity I, Lv. . 4. Core-self evaluation- degree to which individuals lime or dislike themselves ascapable and effective, and whether they feel they are in control of their environment or powerless over their environment 5. Self-esteem- individual's degree of liking or disliking themselves and the degree to which they think they are worthy or unworthy as a person 6. Locusof control- the degree to which people believe that they are masters of their own fate 7. Internals- individuals who believe that they control what happens to them 8. Externals- individuals who believe that what happens to them is controlled by outside forces such as luck or chance 9. Machiavellianism- degree to which an individuals is pragmatic, maintains emotional distance, and believes that ends canjustify means 10. Narcissism- the tendency to be arrogant, have a grandiose senseof self- lmportance, require excessive admiration, and have a senseof entitlement 11. self-monitoring- a personality trait that measures an individual's ability to adjust his or her behavior to external, situational factors
