1 /13 /11 World History: European Expansionist and the Iberian Phase (Euro phase of expansion= Iberian Phase because it was carried out by Spain and Portugal) The Problem How can we participate in the trade of the Indian Ocean? o Geography Europe isn’t on the Indian ocean So if it’s going to get the silk and porcelain of china or the spice from Indonesia and pepper from India it has to get them indirectly through Middlemen Was established trade getting things to Europe In order to get the stuff they’d have to deal with Middlemen Start in Egypt (Mamlucks) who would sell stuff to Venetians Middlemen have to get profit- Egyptians add markup and then Venetians add markup o Very expensive by the time it gets to Europe o European didn’t produce stuff that Indian Ocean people wanted to buy No spices no luxury goods so what could they exchange? Mostly gold and silver hard currency Being sent away in exchange for Indian ocean luxury goods Eventually you’ll run out of gold because it’s kind of not renewable. o Question becomes how do we come directly to the Indian ocean (eliminate the middleman) One way is to sail around Africa No one knew for sure if Africa really stopped going… Issuous Supposedly back in ancient times Phoenicians sailed around Africa and had come up Indian ocean side and ended up in the red sea.

Couldn’t be done all at once because no one really knew much about Africa in Europe. People who start this project (takes nearly a century) are the Portuguese Portugal Why Portugal? o Not a leading country of Europe in any phase of it’s history o Poor country One of few country without any gold o Not much agricultural land Most of it was rocks and mountains o They use the sea a lot Whaling Eat a lot of fish o But they can’t get onto the Mediterranean They’d have to sail through the strait of Gibraltar which was controlled by Aragon o They only have Atlantic So they discover Madera and Isords (?) Established sugar plantations there They start also sailing down coast of Africa o Religious aspect: Iberian countries were conquered by Moors /Muslims They took it back in the Reconquista Deeply imbued idea of fighting non-Christian into Spanish and Portuguese culture. Even though Muslim states had all been kicked out of Iberia there were a lot in North Western Africa
