2/10/11 World History: Revolution in France and Haiti The Cultural Revolution in France It was a total revolution o American Revolution did not change the ruling class Not the case in Revolutionary France Undertook a vast and incomplete project of cultural revolution o Sets precedence in multiple cultural revolution all around the world Revolution grew more radical as it developed Jacobin there was an attempt to completely remake French culture o Suppress Christianity and create French state on basis of abstract rights Liberalism, conservativism, even feminism can be traced to French Revolution o Most obvious political ness from French rev Left and right because of the seating arrangement in French national assembly in 1771 Virtuous Republicanism o These Jacobin and other “lefties” were trying to make Fracne into a virtuous republic Virtuous is important it would only work if people were virtuous o Problem: it had been an aristocrativ monarcy for over 1000 years EX playing cards: what are highest rank over ace? King, Queen and Jack So 2 of clubs is like a peasant king is better than 2 of club is bad It has liberty, fraternity and equality in the revolutionary deck (kind of boring) EX: Dressing: The men’s fine muscular calfs were the ideal beauty in men o Men often wore breeches which will show contors of muscle

In virtuous republic they do not dress like that o Men go around as sans-coullets because that is what republican non aristocratic, virtuous pants. EX: Monsiour, Madame (my lord and my lady respectively) Don’t go around calling each other these things because its not virtuous and aristocratic Go around calling each other “citizen” EX: bee- keeping They realized that the main bee in the hive is actually a female Queen bee o So now in the French revolution they are questioning if they have aristocratic structure in nature o Call it a “laying bee” o Aristocrat eventually becomes a word to describe those who oppose the revolution can even be peasants They are not part of the republic of virtue o Interesting effects on gender One aspect of old regime (way things used to be) One bad thing was that it gave political influence to be held by women Particularly in later stages of revolution there is more room for women But in first there was the idea of a gender role division o Politics is where men belong o Virtuous women stay at home and raise next generation of virtuous citizens Rationality o Another value f virtuous revolution rooted in Enlightenmnet o Standard of uniformity It means things which are reasonable rather than traditional

o EX: before revolution France divided into provinces Each had different customs, different relationships to the state Very little rationality about structure of provinces in French state All were different Revolutionaries hated this because in part it hindered the administrative
