Unformatted text preview: 4/7/11 World History: Decolonization Causes • In the Colonies o Effected by growing opposition throughout the 20 th century Can take a variety of forms: • Purely traditional opposition drawing on traditional culture like the Algierians vs the French o Cannot compete with the technology and resources of European armies • Other forms were rising in the early 20 th century o Like opposition on the part of Western educated leaders able to use western devices and technologies against colonialsm Pandit Nehru- Indian nationalist leader from Hindu background, educated in the west and very W in culture • Traditional values of hindu society were holding India back • Just as people who base opposition on tradition he has separation from the population • Difficult for the oridnaru Indian to follow Nehru • This is why Ghandi is so effective o Able to bridge the gap between W and Indian Ghandi was westernized, trained as a lawyer in London, familiar with W intellectual and cultural traditions • He was able to present himself as a Hindu holy man, an aesthetic in Hindu tradition • Communism o Seen in Ho Chi Ming Went to France to learn to be a pastry chef He tries to get Versialles with the concept of if Poles can live peacefully in their nation why can’t the Vietnamese Doesn’t work So he turns to Communism and in 1920 joins French communist party o Communists have a more difficult time than liberals in relating to indigenous traditions Liberalism is secular Communism is atheist o More likely to come to bloom in countries facing issues with independence o In colonies there is rising nationalism Even more of it in WWII Decoloniziation was a result of WWII • In the Colonizing nations o In WWII Britain wanted to draw heavily on the resources of its colonies Problems: • Quit India movement- Indian nationalists argue that British cannot protect india and therefore they should abandon India and let it be neutral in the war • Also those colonial nationalists who believed independence could be gained through alliance with the Axis o EX Subhas Chandra Bose- believed way Indian freedom from British is to fight on the side of the Axis o Many Indian fighters were captured as POW and he went to these camps and told them to fight on the side of the Japanese for independence not that effective. Duh. o It was an example of how Indians were disaffected by British rule Indians with guns in their hands • Authority in French colonies o French provincial governors have to make the decision to follow Degaulle regime or the Vichy regime?...
