4/14/11 World History: the Age of Big Science The Growth of Science and Technology Science and the government become incredibly intertwined because big science becomes inexplicably wound up with the cold war and the government pays for that shit. Cold War Science The Space Race o US fears losing our technological league o 1957- Soviets launch artificial satellite The Green Revolution New technologies Enviornmental impact o Biggest use of water is agriculture o With development of more and more sophisticated irrigation techniques you get water intensive crps groing in places without much water deserts were turned into cotton farms, land was cheap and you can bring water there… idk…we did it Increased demand for water and competition for water drives a lot of global politics o With green revolution it doesn’t matter hwo fertile the land is if you can put enough fertilizer on it Wilderness disappears Means more and more species vanish in what people call “a great dying”
