Psychology of Women Final Project: Gender Norms The gender norm I decided to break was holding hands and interlocking arms with another woman pretending as if I was in a committed homosexual relationship with her. I decided to break this particular norm because I wanted to experience the feelings my twin sister felt when she goes out into public everyday and is subject to long stares and people tooting their noses up at her as if she was doing something wrong because she is a lesbian. Another reason I chose this particular norm is because as a Christian we are told that a man and a woman are not to be intimate with another person of the same sex or it is violating the moral code that Christians have to uphold. For a man or woman to understand the religious moral restrictions placed on them and still go out and violate this code says something about that person or suggests that love is perhaps something bigger than the religious boundaries placed on them. Therefore, I wanted to see how others viewed people that broke this religious code. To break this norm and get the maximum observations I could, I decided to go to two different grocery store chains approximately 6.5 miles near my home. I chose Kroger and Publix stores to conduct my research. The time was 4:05pm in which many people were leaving church services or shopping for groceries in order to prepare their usual Sunday meals. For these reasons I would be able to observe many reactions. The fact that many church goers would be letting out of service to do some grocery shopping was a primary reason I chose this situation. I wanted to observe the reactions of many people that have strong beliefs and opinions to the sight of two supposedly lesbians shopping together and holding hands in what seemed to be a happy committed lesbian relationship. To describe the situation, the entire experiment lasted about 30 minutes. My sister and I spent 15 minutes in each store. In each store we walked around holding a small basket putting items in it occasionally. We bought two of the items from one store and one item from
