UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TESTER, HAND-OPERATED MODEL U-560A SERIES I. GENERAL INFORMATION The unconfined compression test is an important method of determining shear strength of cohesive and semi-cohesive soils. The test is widely used to supply information needed for the design and construction of civil engineering structures of many kinds, such as buildings, bridges, dams, and embankments. The lightweight, hand-operated U-560A Series Unconfined Compression Tester is entirely self-contained and requires no pressure or electrical connections. Test loads are applied to the specimen through a gearing arrangement located in the totally enclosed base. The gear train is actuated by a two-piece aluminum hand crank. The rate of strain can be regulated during the test by turning the hand crank at the desired rate. Loads are indicated on a proving ring and dial indicator assembly. Readings on the dial are converted to the load applied to the specimen by using the calibration charts supplied with each unit. Available in various capacities, the testers are supplied complete and ready to operate with a proving ring, strain dial, platens, calibration charts and one pad of unconfined compression data sheets. The Unconfined Compression Tester incorporates the following features: * Concentric grooves in platens for easy centering of test specimens * Adjustable upper platen assembly for testing specimens up to 8" (203 mm) in length * High strength aluminum base assembly with plated steel uprights for rust resistance and long life 2
