Glades extending across Biscayne Bay, shown as channels cutting the shoals (blue). South Florida’s mangrove salt water swamps deposit plant material around the exposed roots, forming peat. Peat appears in old transverse glades. Gigantic mangrove in Indonesia. The Miami Formation The Miami limestone formation occupies major portions of the surface of the Atlantic coast in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. The formation reappears in the lower keys. The eastern portion is predominantly cross-bedded, as shown in the photo on the left. They are formed by the shifting of submarine sand dunes. The vertical structure in the middle of the photo is attributed to evidence of a burrowing sea anemone. The western portion has tidal shoal deposits, characterized by large solution channels due to burrowing mollusks, giving the rock a “Swiss cheese” aspect. Miami Limestone; a 3 m exposed in the side of the Coral Gables canal, looking north. Miami Limestone at Ransom Everglades School, South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove. Miami Limestone at South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove. The Miami Limestone, is one of three distinct Pleistocene rock formations in Miami.
