1. What is a borderland? On which borderland does Anzaldúa focus? What conflicts characterize the borderland? A border land is a vague and undetermined place created by the emotional residue of an unnatural boundary. It is in a constant state of transition. The prohibited and forbidden are its inhabitants. Anzaldua focuses on the border that separates the U.S. and Mexico and even more specifically by Texas. There is much ambivalence and unrest resides in the border lands, and death is not uncommon. 2. Describe the political, military, racial, and ideological history of Texas. In the 1800’s Anglo’s migrated illegally into Texas, which was part of Mexico at the time. They drove the natives from their land and forced them to fight a war to keep their own territory. Most famously the battle of the Alamo. In the end the Tejanos lost their land and became foreigners. 3. How have corporations and the state influenced the development of Mexico since the end of the nineteenth century? Anglo agribusiness corporations cheated the small Chicano landowners of their land. Corporate industries came in and abused the land and many of the natives were forced to work in factories that were set up whose profits were not seen by any of them. 4. Why is “wetback” labor rooted historically in inequalities around race and migration? The use of “wetback” labor takes full advantage of the Mexican
