Wallace 1 Joe Wallace Professor Garfinkle English 110 1 October 2009 Throughout the history of civilizations, rituals have played a big role in shaping the way a community comes together. There are different rituals for all types of things. Rituals for good weather or plentiful harvest and even sacrificial rituals in hopes of improving a community’s well being. These different types of traditions and superstitions form a society, and for the most part dictates how it comes together and continues to run. Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, and Ursula Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” both describe two different communities and how they use rituals and tradition no matter how evil they are, for the betterment of their own societies. In the short story “The Lottery”, the community comes together as a whole on the same day of every year to conduct their ritual. In this “Lottery” the head of each household must choose a piece of paper from a box and if his or her piece is marked then their family must proceed in picking out pieces of paper from the box. With everyone in the community watching, one person from the designated family by chance, picks the marked piece of paper. The one person from the family who does pick that paper is then circled by the community and stoned to death. The thought of a more promising harvest is the motivation for this ritual.
