1 Psych115 Neuropharmacology Lecture 2: Review of Neurotransmission Lecture 2: Objectives Identify the 4 major parts of a neuron. Explain how an interneuron differs from a more conventional neuron, like a motor neuron List the organelles in the nucleus and state each of their functions Define “dendritic spine” and explain its role in the integration of multiple neurotransmitter inputs Describe the mechanism through which a neurotransmitter is transported to the terminal Define a varicosity and explain how neurotransmitter release through varicosities differs from a point-to- point synaptic contact. Describe the different types of synapses and illustrate a “real-life” scenario when these different forms of synaptic contact interact to influence neurotransmission. Define “active zone” and “post-synaptic density” List the basic steps involved in vesicle docking and neurotransmitter release and describe the role for the different v- and t-SNAREs in this proces Explain how the stable v-SNARE-t-SNARE complex is dissociated to enable the recycling of vesicles Define the role for synapsins, complexins and synaptotagmin for neurotransmitter release Describe the 3 major mechanisms involves in terminating a neurotransmitter signal. Define “autoreceptor” and describe its role in regulating neurotransmitter release Describe the distribution of ions across the neuron membrane at rest and explain how random motion, electrostatic pressure, ion permeability and active transport contribute to this distribution at rest Describe what happens to the resting membrane potential when a neuron receives excitatory or inhibitory input Compare and contrast “spatial summation” and “temporal summation” and explain how either or both of
