Psych 101 08/10/10 Mindfulness Non-distraction Opposing construct: mind-wandering A fluctuation of attention away form the task at hand toward either: External (distractions) vs. Internal (mind-wandering) Establishing a Causal Relationship Random assignment to one of three conditions: Mindful breathing (half as many attention errors as the other two) Passive relaxation Reading Labels as Heuristics (screwdriver example) Clearly adaptive Clearly not the whole story Surface Relationships Latch on to most salient descriptors Assign a series of stereotypes of labels Being relating to those concepts instead of the person themselves Mindfulness as non-conceptuality Inner dialogue as commentator This is how we think we know the world Appears to be primary source of understanding and insight Direct experience leads to direct understanding
