8/26 John Fiske: Are we all dupes? Pop culture is “contradictory to its core” - Doesn’t deny commercial interests - Wants to give a more complex account - Explain contradiction/struggle We are active in popular culture - Focus on what’s happening at the receiving end - We are not just passive sponges sucking whatever the industry feeds us Everyday uses of culture Every reading/ active consumption is a resistant one - Hit consciousness of each person/group differently - Each experience is unique - Resist that we all interpret same material in same way - No dominant pop culture- only multiple responses to domination We can both turn it off and bend it to our will - Make it mean what we want it to - Not give attention/turn it off o Attention placed on different sectors of pop culture “polysemy”- fragmentation of meaning - Many signs attributed to interpretation - Cultural backgrounds Example: The Simpsons - Uses polysemy with 3 levels of humor
