The goal of this SSPPS case-based session is to reinforce important cardiovascular physiology concepts within a clinical context and strengthen the prerequisite knowledge necessary for the study of therapeutics and the practice of pharmacy. SSPPS Cardiovascular Case History H.F., a 66-year-old man, is admitted with one week of gradually worsening shortness of breath (SOB) and a 6 kg weight gain. Two weeks before admission, he noted the onset of dyspnea on exertion (DOE) after one flight of stairs, orthopnea, and ankle edema. He has also noted episodic bouts of paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (PND). Since then, he has been able to sleep only in a sitting position. H.F. notes a productive cough and nocturia (two to three times/night). A.J.'s has a long history of heartburn, glaucoma, hypercholesterolemia, and hypertension, which has been poorly controlled with hydrodiuril (HCTZ). Physical examination reveals dyspnea, cyanosis, and tachycardia. H.F. has the following vital signs: BP, 168/106 mm Hg; pulse, 94 beats/minute; and respiratory rate, 30 breaths/
