Romanesque architecture is known by its massive quality, its thick walls, round arches,  sturdy piers, groin vaults, large towers and decorative arcading. Each building has  clearly defined forms and they are frequently of very regular, symmetrical plan so that  the overall appearance is one of simplicity when compared with the Gothic buildings that  were to follow. 2. Describe the Gothic Cathedral style. They were cathedrals that always had rib vaults, pointed arches, and flying buttresses  3. Describe how stained glass is made. Glass was usually coloured by adding metallic oxides to the glass while in a molten state  in a clay pot over a furnace, and then cooled in a shaper of what size is wanted. 4. Describe what happened on the following dates: 1122 – abbot sugar combines pointed arches and rib vaults in remodeling the abbey  church of saint-denis 1175 – flying buttresses are first used in the cathedral of notre dame  in paris 1225 – Villard de honnecourt begins a sketchbook of architectural plans, elevations, and  engineering devises
