ATTACHMENT STYLES 2 Several studies look at the impact attachment has on children and adults alike. There is much research on attachment in the infant and toddler years. Julia Braungart- Rieker, Suzanne Courtney, and Molly Garwood look at how the family context affects parent-infant attachment in their research article “Mother- and Father-Infant Attachment: Families in Context”. Magret McKim, Kenneth Cramer, Barbra Stuart, and Deborah O’Connor try to find if thee is a correlation between childcare decisions and attachment security in “Infant Child Decisions and Attachment Security: The Canadian Transition to Child Care Study.” Finally in Beverly Fagot’s article “Attachment, Parenting, and Peer Interactions of Toddler Children,” she looks at whether or not peer interactions are affected by attachment and parenting styles. The purpose of Braungart-Rieker, Courtney, and Garwood’s (1999) study, Mother- and Father-Infant Attachment: Families in Context , was to further the understanding of father’s contributions to their growing infants and children and to take a deeper look at the “infant-father attachment relationship” (p. 535). The researchers believe that the steps taken to secure a bond between father and infant differ from the process to secure a bond between mother and infant. This could be for several reasons, including that mother’s who breastfeed have an added advantage of closeness that the father will never be able to experience. In an attempt to better understand the process of forming infant- mother and father attachment, the researchers take a number of family and contextual factors that they predict may play a role in forming infant-father attachment and then compare these findings to the same factors in relation to the possibility that these may result in mother-infant attachment, as well.

ATTACHMENT STYLES 3 There were originally 105 families participating in the study. However, 28 families dropped out for various reasons. The age of mothers ranged from 25 years to 35 years. The father’s age ranged from 27 years to 39 years. The study included both single-earner and dual-earner families. About 8% of the participants were non-white, the rest of the participants were white. Majority of the participants made between $20,000 and $49,000. A little under 40% of the participants made over $50,000. The rest of the participants made under $20,000. Over half of the mothers went to college, and a little under half of the fathers went to college. An equal amount of mothers only went to high school and had post-graduate education. About one quarter of the father’s went only to high school, and a little over one quarter of father’s went to post-graduate school.
