Stage II Counseling Verbatim Example Kayla is a 22-year-old girl who has had some trouble with compulsive shopping and spending. She graduated the previous year and now works at Headstart. She got engaged when she was 20-years-old and after graduation the engagement was broken off. She has been in an estranged relationship with both of her parents since she left for college. She lives by herself and is completely on her own financially. She has an older sister whom she is very close to and talks with on a regular basis by way of telephone. In her spare time she likes to shop, run, and meet men in hopes of finding a committed relationship. Counselor : Good to see you again, Kayla. How have you been doing since our last session? (Open-ended question) Kayla : I’ve been doing well- about the same. The day of our last session I did really well. I didn’t go shopping at all that day but every day after that I have gone shopping but I haven’t spent as much as I have before. Counselor : That’s good you are making some improvements. Why don’t you pick a day that you went shopping this past week and tell me about that day? (Positive Regard/Open-ended question) Kayla : Well, Saturday I slept in. By the time I woke up, Mike- the guy that I have been seeing had already left. But before he left he had the time to write me a looovely note explaining to me that our relationship wasn’t going to work out because he needed his space. So after that, I took a shower and got ready, had a late breakfast, and left for the big Macy’s Sale. I spent the afternoon shopping and then met up with my sister for dinner. Then I met up with my girlfriends and went out to the bars. I met the most awesome guy! He bought me a drink and we just really hit it off. He kept complimenting me on my dress and saying how beautiful I was and he just seemed so sweet and it just felt so right. We left the bar together and went for a late night McDonald’s run. After that we went back to my place and called it a night. Counselor : Well that sounds like a very full day! So, your day started out pretty rough after reading the note Mike had left you, then you went shopping, met your sister, went out with the girls, and met… (Paraphrase/Probe) Kayla : Uumm… Gosh… I don’t remember. .. [Long pause]…I think it was Alex. Yeah. Alex Counselor : Okay! Well, let’s talk about your shopping some more. How does it make you feel when you buy something? (Probe)

Kayla : Well whenever I buy something I feel amazing. Especially if it is something that is really cute and I have been wanting for a long time. Like the other day I had wanted this pink skirt with flowers on it for Easter, and when my card swiped through the machine I just had a rush of adrenaline run through my body. Shopping just gives me this amazing high and confidence. Counselor
