The following is an evaluation of the needs for a human service program concerning Adult Abuse Protection in the community of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: Nature of the Condition Everyday many adults across the United States face some form of abuse. This abuse can be physical, emotional, and/or social. In 2009 over 20,000 cases of adult abuse were reported in Oklahoma alone; out of these 17,000 cases were investigated (“Adult Protective Services”, 2010). The Oklahoma Department of Human Services provides a service called Adult Protective Services which helps adults who are abused by removing them from the abusive environment by either their own choice or by a court order, if it is deemed necessary. Abusive situations are difficult situations. Sometimes the victim is unaware that he or she is being abused. It is important to provide support and understanding to these adults so that they can understand their situation, except their situation, and adjust to a new, healthier environment. Definitions on Terms An older adult for the purposes of our program is any person 40 years of age and older. Abuse comes in many shapes and forms including, but not limited to, physical abuse, emotional abuse, social abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Physical abuse “is the use of physical force against someone in a way that injures or endangers that person” (“Elder Abuse and Neglect”, 2010). Emotional abuse includes yelling, name-calling, blaming, shaming, isolation, intimidation, and controlling behavior (“Elder Abuse and Neglect”, 2010). Social abuse for the context of this paper is “the collective abuse by a group of people toward an individual” (“Social Abuse”, 2006). Financial abuse includes taking money or property; forging Definitions of Terms (cont’d) P a g e | 2
