Lobbying - Definition…act of trying to influence government decision-makers - Named after public rooms where this type of behavior first took place (lobbies) - Conducted by lobbyists - Lobbyists- individuals who work for specific interests groups or serve as the spokesperson for a particular set of interests 2. Electioneering - Participation in the election process by providing services or campaign money 3. Policy- making - Participation in providing public policy to solve existing problems 4. Building Coalitions - Bringing together diverse interest groups in a common lobbying effort 5. Grassroots Pressure - Lobbying by rank-and-file members of an interest group - Use tactics such as letter writing and protests to influence government “ a bottoms up effort” 6. Litigation - the use of the courts to influence public policy 7. Hard-live tactics - Use of illegal action and civil disobedience to further a cause Interest Groups Today… - impact of 9/11 -
